The Great Gatsby

If you haven't read "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald then you must! It is such a gem. I just love it. I don't really know exactly what it is about it that makes me love it so, but I do. Maybe it's the longing that Gatsby has for Daisy that is never filled. Maybe it's the carelessness of the characters throughout the entire book. It could be the way they talk, the words they use, the way they describe the way they feel. It could also be the time period it's set in or the culture that seeps through Fitzgerald's writing. It also may be the sadness that eludes from the entire book. But now that I think about it I think what I love the most is Nick Carraway, the narrator, the one  who sees it all. I think he is the reason that I love the book so much. He is clever and kind, he is everything that the others are not. He is the moral one, the loyal one.
Well whatever the reasons are, it's wonderful and it leaves me feeling wonderfully sad when I finish reading it.

If personality is an unbroken series of successful gestures, then there was something gorgeous about him, some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life, as if he were related to one of those intricate machines that register earthquakes ten thousand miles away." -"...it was an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as I have never found in any other person and which it is not likely I shall ever find again. No- Gatsby turned out alright at the end; it is what preyed Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams that temporarily closed out my interest in the abortive sorrows and short-winded elations of men."
